When one reflects on the daily challenges faced by persons suffering from mental illnesses, one must begin to admire those who do so. One must also reflect on the great courage, determination, sense of self-preservation, and even heroism required to persevere in the face of such challenges. As Christopher Reeve once said:

When the first Superman movie came out I was frequently asked, "What is a hero?" ...My answer was that a hero is someone who commits a courageous action without considering the consequence...Now my definition is completely different. I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.

Although recognizing the strength of character displayed by people suffering from mental illnesses is essential, it is not enough. It is equally important to realize that countless people diagnosed with serious mental illnesses eventually recover and lead productive lives, including working, maintaining healthy relationships, and gaining a restored sense of self-worth and meaning. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "People with mental illness can and do recover. Studies show that most people with mental illnesses get better, and many recover completely." Further, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has stated, "The best treatments for serious mental illnesses today are highly effective; between 70 and 90 percent of individuals have a significant reduction of symptoms and improved quality of life, with a combination of pharmacological and psychosocial treatment and supports."

Lincoln Behavioral Services is committed to providing services that will maximize each person's opportunity to persevere, overcome obstacles, and recover.

Please join us in our mission.
